Edna Adan Ismail, SRN, CMB, SCM, is a UK trained Nurse-Midwife who was the first qualified Nurse-Midwife in Somaliland. She has worked extensively in Maternal and Child Health for the WHO and was the WHO Representative in the Republic of Djibouti for several years.

Nivaldo Alonso, MD, PhD, is associate professor of plastic surgery at the Department of Surgery and director of the Service of Craniofacial Surgery at the Hospital das Clinicas at the University of São Paulo (USP). Professor Alonso is also Clinical Director of the Craniofacial Unit of the Hospital for Craniofacial Anomalies at the USP and past president of the Brazilian Association of Craniofacial Surgery 2000-2002.

Emmanuel A. Ameh, MBBS, FWACS, FACS is Professor of Surgery and Chief of Paediatric Surgery at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Nigeria. Dr. Ameh is an active advocate for the provision of surgical services in low and middle income countries, through his research and publications as well as through speaking at relevant meetings.

Eunice Dérivois Merisier, MD, is a general and paediatric surgeon in Haiti who has worked as medical director of the philanthropic hospital Hôpital Lumière at Cavaillon, dean of the Université Lumière medical school in Port-au-Prince, university lecturer and as chief of emergency services at Hôpital de l’Université d’État d’Haiti.

Lesong Conteh, MSc, PhD, is a senior lecturer in health economics in the Centre for Health Policy, the Institute of Global Health Innovation and the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, School of Public Health at Imperial College London. Her research focuses on low- and middle-income country (LMIC) health economics and health system research, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa.

Anna Dare, MB ChB, PhD, is a University of Toronto surgical trainee with affiliations to the King’s Centre for Global Health (KCGH) in London, UK. She holds a PhD in Surgery from the University of Cambridge, UK. Anna has a longstanding interest in health systems development and health innovation, particularly in underserved and indigenous communities and in low- and middle-income countries.

Shenaaz El-Halabi, MPH, is the Deputy Permanent Secretary for Preventive Health Services at the Botswana Ministry of Health in Gaborone, Botswana and holds an MPH degree from Boston University School of Public Health. In her current position she oversees the departments of Public Health, HIV/AIDS and Health Policy Development, Monitoring and Evaluation.

Paul Farmer, MD, PhD, is Kolokotrones University Professor and Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and co-founder of Partners In Health. He also serves as UN Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Community Based Medicine and Lessons from Haiti.

Rowan Gillies, MBBS, FRACS, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who has worked as a general doctor, administrator or surgeon in Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Southern Sudan, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, Gaza, Cote D’Ivoire and Haiti.

Sarah Greenberg, MD, is a Paul Farmer Global Surgery Research Fellow in the Program in Global Surgery and Social Change at Harvard Medical School and a General Surgery Resident at the Medical College of Wisconsin. During the Commission process, she coordinated all global efforts. Her global surgery work has been focused in Haiti and Peru.

Caris Grimes, BSc, MBBS, MRCS, is a registrar in General and Colorectal Surgery and a Global Surgery Affiliate at Kings Centre for Global Health. Born and brought up in West Africa, she has maintained a longstanding interest in health and disease in low income countries.

Russell Gruen, MBBS, PhD, FRACS, is a General and Trauma Surgeon at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. He is Professor of Surgery and Public Health at Monash University and Director of the National Trauma Research Institute (NTRI) of Australia.

Thaim B Kamara, MBBS, is a Urologist by training and the Chief of Surgery at Connaught Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He has published extensively on the burden of surgical disease, access to surgical care and surgical capacity in Sierra Leone.

Chris Lavy, OBE, MD, MCh, FCS, FRCS, is an orthopaedic surgeon in Oxford UK. He is honorary professor at Oxford and The London school of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and medical director of CURE International, a Christian mission specialising in children’s reconstructive surgery in resource poor countries.

Ganbold Lundeg, MD, PhD, is Associate Professor at the Department of Surgery, Division of EM and Anesthesia at the Health Sciences University of Mongolia. He trained in anesthesiology in Mongolia, Korea and Germany and holds a PhD in Anesthesiology and Pain management.

Nyengo Mkandawire, BMBS, MCh(ORTH), FCS(ECSA), FRCS, is Professor of Orthopaedics and Head of Surgery at the College of Medicine at the University of Malawi in Blantyre, Malawi. Professor Mkandawire trained as a doctor at Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia and as orthopaedic surgeon in the UK.

Edgar Rodas, MD, FACS, was President and Founder of the CINTERANDES FOUNDATION, an NGO mainly providing surgery in remote places in an operating room mounted on a truck. Since 1994, more than 7,200 operations have been performed with excellent results. Besides surgery, the program aims to expose medical students and surgical residents to global humanitarian surgery. Dr. Rodas passed away in March 2015. The Commission Report is dedicated to him.

Nobhojit Roy, MBBS, MS, MPH, is a visiting Professor for Public Health at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Deemed University) in Mumbai, India. Dr. Roy trained as a Trauma Surgeon in Mumbai, India and the UK and holds an MPH from John Hopkins University. He served as a rural surgeon in rural and tribal areas of India.

Richard Sullivan, MD, PhD, is Professor in Cancer Policy & Global Health at Kings College London and Director of the Kings Institute of Cancer Policy where he leads the cancer global health program. He is Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad Catolica, Chile, and on the Kings Marjan Centre for Conflict & Conservation.

Iain H Wilson, MB ChB, FRCA, is a consultant anesthetist at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust. He is the immediate past president of the Association of Anesthetists in Great Britain and Ireland and a trustee of Lifebox, a not-for-profit organization providing pulse oximeters to operating rooms, aiming at improving the safety and quality of surgical care in low-resource countries.

Gavin Yamey, MBBS, MPH, MA, MRCP, leads the Evidence-to-Policy Initiative (E2Pi) at the Global Health Group, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), an academic global health policy research and think tank that works to narrow the gap between evidence and policy.

Winnie Yip, PhD, is Professor of Health Policy and Economics at the Blavatnik School of Government, the University of Oxford, and Senior Research Fellow of Green Templeton College, Oxford, where she co-directs the Global Health Policy Program. She is also Adjunct Professor of International Health Policy and Economics at Harvard School of Public Health.
